What Is A Technical Chart Pattern?

Technical Chart Patterns are a western approach to making sense of medium to long term price action on data charts. On this site we specifically focus on financial charts, mainly stocks. The patterns identified generally fall into one of two classes - continuation patterns and reversal patterns. As you may be able to surmise, continuation patterns indicate a continuation of the current price trend, while reversal patterns indicate a reversal of the price trend.

Technical Chart Patterns

There are many technical chart patterns, each of which are composed of many individual data points. Identifying these patterns for some is as much art as it is science. However, rules can be created which identify these chart patterns on the price data charts. Things such as multiple moving average lines and momentum can be combined to systematically identify a majority of these patterns when they appear.
